Couple days off -New York

I don't really like cities, they always seem too close to violent chaos for me. But it had been a while since I'd been up there for sun and surf and the forecast was really great. I snapped this shot from the Verazzano so its likely I'll be going to jail for it given the absolutely zero tolerance for photos and video...Much of the trip up there was spent with my elbow out the window like the true redneck I am(thats how nice it was) ...viva new york and the waves! much friendlier surfers than drivers but that goes for down here as well

Swashbucklers-Fiona Friday

My Pops really finished up his pirate ship a couple months ago, but Fiona and her cousins were having a field day on this thing. I think they spent about 4 straight hours climbing, rowing, and swinging...its good to be a kid

New Stuff in the Harry and Beans Coffee online store!!!

It has been awesome hearing the positive responses to the new store and I thank you for your continued support. Stylistically, I have honestly always been a copier and the new store makes no exceptions. I have added some new selections to give everybody a wider variety to choose from...also I am going to offer seasonal flavored coffee choices in limited quantities as well.
Check out the new stuff here. Thanks again and have a happy Sunday!

The Chase for a Panhead

Been looking for an old panhead for a long time. It seems as though every time I get close to pulling the trigger, the bike gets sold and shipped to Asia. Maybe I'll have to start searching craigslist in Thailand or Japan

Cowgirl Up! Fiona Friday

Been teaching Fiona how to lasso and its been a lot of fun. We talk in funny cowboy voices and strut around rustlin' cattle...anyway everytime I look at this photo it makes me laugh and reminds me to slow down, take a deep breath and not be all tied up with stuff that doesn't really matter...

Political Hangover

For the past twenty years or so politics and its history has been somewhat of a hobby. The amount of books, websites and debates I have consumed over the years is staggering and frankly after waking up this morning, a waste of time. More of the same shifting views beauty pageant crap and I have finally had enough. One guy stumbles in his cowboy boots and the media experts claim it over- you need to like the next guy. Or maybe in this great contest I should support the reigning favorite who promised alot of the same things this new crop of clowns claims. Now I aint bummin because I wear cowboy boots and I can relate to Perry, I wouldn't have supported him anyway, but I am sick of these morons on tv telling me whose in and whose out in this perverse fashion contest to see who looks the most presidential. What the heck does that even mean anyway? Its not really that entertaining anymore.Maybe if I had to do it over again I'd choose something constructive to waste my time on like fishing or something. I can hardly believe how gullible as a people we are posting up behind this candidate or that because they somehow speak for us blah blah blah. .. now as this election cycle spins around I am supposed to be waiting for some savior to save us from total destruction(sounds familiar) and how the next jack ass is going to change the economy, health care blah blah blah. I think I'm out this time around...rant over

FTO Nicaraguan is back!

Back in the day, I always had some Nicaraguan kicking around...spent about 8 or 9 years trying to drum up a following. Anyway, I haven't been able to get it for a while but recently I scored a new bag and it is magnificient! Nicaraguan is a nice strong, full-bodied coffee. I roast it up pretty oily because I like the smokey taste. Real nice choice if you have a cone type coffee maker or a chemex which i brewed mine in today. I'll throw it up in the store in the next day or so or feel free to stop by

Crazy Kid-Fiona Friday

The playground scene as a dad, changes all the time. It used to be the case that I was an integral part of the swings, monkey bars etc. Lately it has been like watching a daredevil doing stunts on and off of everything. Coming from my risky perspective this should be expected and completely normal. However, most of the time, I am completely on edge and doing constant risk assessment thinking she is going to kill herself. So here she is charging up a rock wall...sorta makes me wish I didn't show her those toe and hand holds last fall...

Fiona Fridays

So I have never been much of an art lover, even though art was a big part of my upbringing. I never really got it. Art major types struggle to make me understand the point of it all. Well, no one has taught me more about making stuff and being creative than my four year old. It just has to make you feel something. Everytime I see one of her creations that certainly is the case. So on fridays, this blog will take a break from all that other stuff and feature stuff that she makes. enjoy!

New Neighbor at Harry and Beans Coffee

So the trifecta has finally been completed. Last spring, a new seafood place opened up behind me and I casually used to joke if only we had beer in the complex, we'd be all set with coffee, scallops and beer. well it happened, Tuckahoe Brewing Co. will be up and running in a couple months. When they start their tours on Saturdays, I'll be open as well serving up coffee and espresso and of course coffee by the pound. I'll post the hours as soon as I know 'em. I look forward to seeing ya out at the factory.
Check out the brewery here http://tuckahoebrewingcompany.blogspot.com/
look forward to a Harry and Beans Coffee infused stout soon!

Steeds in the Stable

The twins are gonna undergo some changes this winter after the holidays. The ruckus will be more dramatic, I really wanna see if I can hit 50mph with a 50cc motor so she's getting stretched and lowered, probably a new paint scheme as well. The rebel needs really only a bit of TLC, new tires, chain/sprockets ...minor stuff. However if I tear into her, it will probably look and ride much different next spring. Until then, I'll concentrate on roasting the finest Harry and Beans Coffee I can. Thanks again for the overwhelming response to the new store, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for Day 1 chapter 3

Well thanks everyone for a great first day of the new store. Apparently my coffee was missed...a couple bugs in the store that I am trying to sort out is the dreaded shipping table. Those of you who ordered and took advantage of the free shipping still got charged so refunds will be forthcoming...
Plenty of coffee going out today in this rain. While I wait for it to clear, I'll dream of owning this bike, 1940 HD knucklehead, just beautiful...

Harry and Beans Coffee via mail

Ok, so those of you reading this blog have suffered through some pretty bizarre procedures to get my coffee sent to your house. It is no secret to the people closest to me I have very little affinity to technology and am certainly somewhat of a recluse. So if you don't want to drive out to the roastery in the hopes of catching me there, (I know its hard to figure me out), check out the new store link over on the right hand corner. I am offering up two pound packages for $21.99 shipped in the U.S. for $5.99 or order 2 packages and I'll ship them for free. As for now I will not be hassling you by email but trying to rebuild this thing organically from the ground up. I have no interest in being the next petes or amazon or whatever. I just want people to dig my coffee and get it in their mailbox.
So no more third party nonesense, no more weird emails, no more lame specials. Just great, delicious coffee from my own two hands.

Wildwood Bike Week

Been down in the wildwoods for motorcycle madness. overall it was pretty fun and nice and loud. Out of the thousands of bikes down there I only saw two that I really liked, (this period specific chopper) guess I have obstinate taste. Back to work tomorrow...

Lotus Position

Most of this Godsend swell I've been on this Bing Lotus. It is such a great board for New Jersey. Hollow, flat faced...doesnt matter. I've been riding a 9.75 greenough 4a in it for a while, seems like a magic fin for it. rail turns, pivot turns and noseriding this board is really versatile and becoming the favorite in the quiver for good waves. go get one swell season is here.
Harry and Beans Coffee will be in Margate for the final farmer's market of the season and Sunday in Stone harbor for its finale as well. This week pick up a couple extra bags to get you through the next evacuation

Free Foam!!!!!

A big shout out to whoever tied this to a stop sign on 30th street! I am so pumped. Eight feet of fun foam to carve into some new playthings...Pretty sure this material will yield my sixth finless creation. I think I am gonna use a blowtorch this time to melt the foam a bit to make it a hair stronger so it lasts a little longer

The Reaper

The reaper done took my foam! My little experiment lasted two sessions and about 4 hours total of surfing. I've been trying skateboardy stuff like shoveits on my epoxy finless board so when I tried them out on the foam slab it didnt take well...I tried to catch a few on the now 3'11" slab to no avail ...I am putting the word out form old softtop surfboards, I'll take whatever you got. This foam is perfect for flying down the line and getting dizzy from the spins.

Harry and Beans Coffee label art

I often get asked why only some of my blends have special art on the bags and why not all and my response is always it takes alot of time. Jamie kelly has produced some of the most popular blend label art such as Cookies Good Karma and Dawn Patrol. Naho recently rendered some colored pencil work for the upcoming labels for Organic Costa Rican and Zicatela blend. I really love the colors and am looking forward to the final finished work to I can transfer it to the bags for your viewing pleasure.
...on a side note, a very special thanks to the folks at the Stone Harbor Farmers Market on Sunday making it the most successful market ever over there, glad you are all digging the coffee and supporting the cause.

Harry and Beans Coffee is swamped!!!!

Harry and Beans Coffee headquarters has been swamped with orders. If it wasn't for my trusty assistant Naho and delivery boy Jordy, folks certainly would've been getting their coffee late. I have been sneaking away however chasing down this mysterious groundswell, its been a real nice suprise. Tomorrow, Harry and beans Coffee is in Margate serving up the finest shots of espresso around and fresh roasted beans in a bag for take-away...
see ya tomorrow or sneaking in on your secret surf spot

While waiting for coffee and waves...

Pallet day at Harry and beans Coffee. Some times the trucks are on time, other times traffic and other hangups keep me waiting for hours for delivery of green beans. So in the meantime, I try to find something constructive to do. Tomorrow, the forecast is calling for a little swell to push in so I thought I'd hack out another finless surfcraft for the waves. Most of the time I've been switching between riding finless when the waves are onshore and longboarding the clean stuff. This little number was taken from a salvaged soft board and I cut it down to 5 foot. Discovery is a wonderful thing. I found out these softies have parrellel stringers nose to tail so now I can shape it down alot thinner than I thought and keep some of the stiffness intact.
Well I'm halfway there and the coffees here so I'm off to roast, I'll finish her up tonight for tomorrow's dawn patrol.

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

I'm lovin' it!

I took a break from my new Bing Levitator yesterday and pulled out the old gold standard in a crowd at waverly. Man that board is great, especially with the shiny new fin installed. I'm definitely gonna keep it handy, one because it works and two because its the first board Matt ever shaped for me.
No surf tomorrow though as Harry and Beans Coffee takes precedence at the Margate Farmer's Market from 8:30 till 12:30. This weeks special will be Sumatra and it will be hot and heavy under the tent...well the coffee that is

What a find...feeding the addiction

Its really hard to admit but I really love scooters...I just picked this up, the little brother or sister to my motorcycle. 2003 honda ruckus, yeehaw! 18" ape hangers and tonight its getting the full rat rod treatment, paint and such...anyway its the craziest looking scoot I ever saw so I had to snag it. But alas its off to dodge lightening at the stone harbor market. Hot Harry and Beans Coffee under the tent, I hope to see you all soon!

My Pop the pirate

Had a great father's day over at my folks house yesterday. My Pops never ceases to amaze me. He's a true artist in every sense of the word. Everything he creates however, is functional. Several years ago he acquired this old boat with fins sticking out the sides completely stripped down to the hull. We all tried to convince him to make the old batman boat from the 60's show out of it but he had other ideas...a full-fledged pirate ship! Everything is scavenged or fabricated down to the zillion sails he made, and the many masts installed on this thing. First voyage is sometime this week. This thing is gonna fly with all the sail he has rigged up on her. That's my daughter in the shot for scale.
happy father's day dad! really proud of your latest creation.

Shade grown Organic Costa Rican

Never before at Harry and Beans Coffee have I carried Organic Costa Rican. A couple years ago, I wandered around trying to find a tasty organic Costa Rican to replace the royal mountain tarrazzu I've been roasting for fourteen years. The ultimate goal at Harry and Beans Coffee, is to make the entire menu Fair Trade Organic but not at the expense of quality and taste. This new arrival surpasses the old Costa Rican I've always had in the past. Still buttery smooth like the tarrazzu, but a bit richer methinks. I can't wait to get it in some blends to see where it can go. Stop by for a cup to try it yourself or send me an email. hpcoltrane@gmail.com.
